Lindsay Capuano – Is She Wrong For Being a Geek?

It seems that Lindsay Capuano has been in the news again. This time, it’s for a much different reason. Capuano has been found “in love” with another man, 27 year-old Spencer Reed. Here’s what happened…

This all started when Spencer got upset over some comments Capuano had made on an internet forum. In one of her podcasts, she made statements about being a fan of Fifty Shades of Grey, among other things. Spencer wasn’t happy about those comments, and he confronted her in the forum. It was that conversation that lead to this whole affair. Lindsay apparently became uncomfortable and did not want to discuss the situation with him…at least not right away.

When I first heard about this, I was upset too. But then I realized that Capuano is probably just a huge fan of Ana’s work, which is fine. She’s certainly not hurting for someone to be a fan…as long as they are not hurting for someone to be involved in their life! So basically, Capuano’s issue with Spencer was the fact that he wasn’t enjoying her fan fiction?

But then it becomes very unclear as to why Capuano would be hanging out in a forum for fantasy fans and not mingling with the crowd. If you read between the lines, you can pretty much get the idea that Capuano thinks she’s better than everyone else…and that’s OK, because we are all fans! We all want to be appreciated, we all want to be admired. And if that’s true, why should someone be hanging out in a forum full of people who think exactly the exact same way as them? That just doesn’t make any sense to me.

So basically Capuano calls herself a geek, because she read too many science-fiction novels. That doesn’t make me say she’s not one, but to use that as an excuse to dismiss everything she stands for. She is an icon, and she is correct to do so. Her words should not be misconstrued by others who do not share the same fan base.

The point of this whole thing is that people are saying that Capuano is wrong for not reading lots of books, but her fans are claiming that they are right. Again, let’s look at her quote from the novel, I agree she is a geek…but that is only because she loves science-fiction. She loves writing about it and loves to share her ideas. It’s not that she doesn’t have great people skills, or is some kind of geek genius. She is just using those geek skills in the service of helping us realize what a wonderful life she has helped us all to live.
